While there is much to be said for the development of social enterprises to augment cash flow for not-for-profits, the idea is not without risk.

Because not-for-profits are by nature risk averse, probably the biggest risk is jumping too quickly.  The core-business has to really ‘have its act together’ before the stresses of both the launch and operation of a social enterprise can even be contemplated.
